Social Sciences Department

The subject “Social Sciences” in Years 5 and 6 covers the following topics:

• Introduction to the Subject
• Nutrition – how do people get enough to eat?
• Water – natural resource or human-controlled?
• Tourism and mobility – faster, farther, smarter?
• Democracy and participation – equal rights for all?
• Europe – without borders?
• Religions in society – living together or in conflict?
• The city and its diversity – an advantage or a disadvantage?
• Diversity in society – challenge and/or opportunity?

Social studies comprises geography, history and civics.

The choice of topics and starting with familiar ideas that gradually become more abstract are intended to develop multidimensional thinking. Students learn about social diversity and understand geographical, historical and political connections.

Students learn to work with different sources of information, such as historical sources, maps and media. They also learn to formulate well-founded hypotheses and present their findings.

Social studies is a core subject. Students sit three tests per school year.

In our SESB classes, social studies is taught in Russian.
