Life Skills
Lebenskunde is a school subject that teaches values and is offered on an equal footing with religious education in Berlin schools. Its philosophical foundations include knowledge about nature and society, as well as principles for living based on secular humanist traditions. It focuses on responsibility, self-determination, non-violent interaction and tolerance.
Lessons are guided by the children’s experiences and feelings. They learn to respect one another, listen, manage their feelings, resolve conflicts peacefully and develop a sense of community.
Topics such as “Who am I?”, “Dealing with my feelings”, “What can I do for nature and the environment?”, “What is friendship?”, “Human rights/children’s rights”, “What is bullying?” and “The diversity of cultures and religions in Berlin” are addressed in an age-appropriate way through discussions, role-play, projects, the use of media and more.
The Humanist Association of Germany, Berlin/Brandenburg regional association, is responsible for delivering and designing the life skills classes.
