“Mathematics helps us understand the world,” said Prof. Dr. Albrecht Beutelsbacher of the University of Giessen. (ND, 25/26 May 24) .

Our mathematics lessons help children understand the world around them. Using hands-on materials and practical learning methods, we introduce students to number sense, the foundations of mental and written arithmetic, an understanding of size and measurement, the basics of geometry and an introduction to probability and statistics.

Alongside smaller class projects, every spring we break up maths lessons with our project day, “Maths Is Everywhere!”, much to the delight of all the children at our school. Our Year 3 to Year 6 pupils also look forward to taking part in the annual Kangaroo Maths Competition. By solving the problems, children can demonstrate their creativity and logical thinking. The results and awards ceremony are eagerly anticipated. In addition to larger prizes for the top performers, all other participants receive a prize too. Our maths whizzes have the opportunity to take part in the Mathematics Olympiad, where they can qualify all the way through to the Berlin state finals.

Children who are motivated to learn and have diagnosed difficulties with maths receive support in class and, for a time, additional help in temporary maths support groups. Information about maths difficulties (dyscalculia) is available on the SiBUz Mitte website:

We support children with special educational needs in the area of “Learning” at a level appropriate to each child.
