Insight into the lesson
English lessons
What you should know about English lessons at our school
- According to the primary school curriculum, lessons in grade 3 begin with 2 hours per week. One hour is divided into two parts.
- In grades 3 and 4, the children learn with "Sunshine" (Cornelsen Verlag). The teaching materials correspond to their world of experience and leave room for further topics.
- Participation and learning progress are noted on the report card. A grade is given starting in grade 4.
- In grades 5 and 6 we use G 21 D1 and G 21 D2 Plus (Cornelsen Verlag).
- Each student spends one lesson per week working on the relevant computer programs in our school's computer lab. Here, too, there is close cooperation with our teaching staff.
- We celebrate holidays like Halloween, Pancake Day, Christmas, Easter, etc., to impart knowledge about the country.
- We have been participating in the international competition "The Big Challenge" since the 2008/09 school year.
- The highlight is a trip to southern England with the 6th grade students (more information).
Natural sciences
The subject "Natural Sciences" in grades 5 and 6 of our primary school includes the following topics:
- Introduction to the new subject
- World of the Big - World of the Small
- Plant-animal habitats
- Sun-weather-seasons
- Handling substances in everyday life
- Body-Health-Development
- Body and movement
These topics are often interconnected.
We place particular importance on achieving action competences that result from the interaction of factual and methodological competences and social skills.
The subject "Natural Sciences" has the status of a core subject.
In the SESB area, instruction is also given in Russian.
Social sciences
The subject "Social Sciences" in grades 5 and 6 covers the following topics:
- Introduction to the subject
- Nutrition – how do people get their fill?
- Water – purely natural or in human hands?
- Tourism and mobility – faster, further, smarter?
- Democracy and participation – equal rights for all?
- Europe – without borders?
- Religions in society – coexistence or conflict?
- City and urban diversity – advantage or disadvantage?
- Diversity in society – challenge and/or opportunity?
Social sciences encompass the subjects of geography, history, and political education.
The choice of topics and the approach of starting with familiar concepts that gradually become more abstract aim to foster multi-dimensional thinking. Students learn about social diversity and gain an understanding of spatial, historical, and political contexts.
Students learn to work with various sources of information, such as historical sources, maps, and media. They also learn to formulate reasoned hypotheses and present their findings.
Social sciences is a core subject. Three tests are written per school year.
In our SESB classes, social sciences are taught in Russian.
Fine arts
In the subject of Fine Arts, students learn about different artists and artistic techniques. In addition to visiting exhibitions, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and performance art are part of the curriculum.
German lessons
German language classes are also taught using an action- and project-oriented approach.
Math lessons
"Mathematics helps us understand the world," Professor Dr. Albrecht Beutelsbacher of the University of Giessen once said. (ND, May 25/26, 2024)
Through our mathematics lessons, we also want to help children understand the world. Using hands-on, activity-based learning methods, we introduce our students to number sense, a foundation for mental and written arithmetic, concepts of magnitude, basic geometry, and initial insights into probability and statistics.
In addition to smaller, classroom-based projects, we liven up math learning every spring with our "Math is Everywhere!" project day, much to the delight of all the children in our school. Our third to sixth graders also greatly enjoy participating in the annual Kangaroo Math Competition. Solving the problems allows the children to demonstrate their creativity and logical thinking. The results and the awards ceremony are eagerly anticipated – besides larger prizes for the top performers, all participants receive a prize. Our math whizzes have the opportunity to participate in the Mathematics Olympiad, where they can qualify to become the state champion of Berlin.
High-achieving children with diagnosed math difficulties receive support in class and, if necessary, additional support in temporary math enrichment courses. Information about math difficulties (dyscalculia) can be found on the SiBUz Mitte website:
https://www.berlin.de/sen/bildung/schule/foerderung/lernschwierigkeiten/rechenschwierigkeiten/
We support children with special educational needs in the area of "learning" at a level appropriate to the child.
Life skills
Life Studies is a subject that deals with the transmission of values and is offered on an equal footing with religious education in Berlin schools. Its philosophical foundations are insights into nature and society, as well as rules for living based on secular humanist traditions. The focus is on responsibility, self-determination, non-violent interaction, and tolerance.
The lessons are based on the children's experiences and feelings. They should learn to respect each other, listen, manage their feelings, resolve conflicts peacefully, and develop a sense of community.
Topics such as "Who am I?", "Dealing with my feelings", "What can I do for nature and the environment?", "What is friendship?", "Human rights/children's rights", "What is bullying?" and "Diversity of cultures and religions in Berlin" are addressed according to the age of the children and dealt with in the form of discussions, role-playing, projects, use of media, etc.
The Humanist Association of Germany, Berlin/Brandenburg State Association, is responsible for the implementation and design of the life skills lessons.
Christian religious education
We offer Protestant and Catholic religious education for your children; this is open to everyone, regardless of whether they belong to a denomination or not.
In our groups, we teach knowledge about biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments, such as Abraham, Moses, Noah, and Jesus, in their historical context, and we also discuss the significance of these stories for us today.
We explain Christian holidays, for example the origin and meaning of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. In our school and in everyday life we encounter other cultures and religions, therefore we also impart knowledge about other world religions.
We make our lessons varied with stories, picture stories, fantasy journeys, role-playing, songs, painting and crafts, and of course we are in constant communication with our students.
