All-day school

At the elementary school at the Brandenburg Gate, two organizational forms of Berlin schools are used: the open and the structured all-day school.

What does that mean?

The structured all-day school program runs from the start of classes until 4:00 p.m. Attendance is mandatory for children during this time, as they receive supplementary activities in addition to regular lessons. This applies to the SESB classes.

The timetable for SESB classes also differs from that of regular classes:

Timetable of the State European School Berlin (SESB):

Instruction vintage
1 2 3 4 5 6
Mother tongue (7) (7) 6 6 5 5
Partner language (5) (5) 6 6 5 5
German 1 1 1 1

Science (2) (2) 3 5 - -

2nd foreign language 5 5

Total number of hours 25 25 25 26 32 33

The open all-day school program encompasses both regular school hours and additional supervised time for children. Generally, children can be supervised between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The "can" in the last sentence means that attendance outside of regular school hours is not mandatory. This applies to classes in the regular program.

  • Educational concept

We believe that school must be more than just a place where children learn to read and write and acquire knowledge in various subjects. Today, school must also be a home for children, a place where they meet adults who treat them with understanding and warmth and who are willing to listen to their questions and concerns. School cannot simply be a series of lessons; it must be vibrant and diverse, encompassing play, sports, and fun, artistic and craft activities, numerous conversations with children, as well as excursions, field trips, theater performances, and much more. Primary school is where crucial foundations are laid for a child's future academic path. It is here that decisions are made about whether children develop and maintain a love of school, whether they remain curious and eager to learn, and whether they learn to cope with age-appropriate demands. These principles do not contradict the understanding that children want to learn and achieve, and that they should therefore be challenged and supported by us. A key focus of the school's educational work was its participation in the "State European School Berlin" (SESB) pilot project. Since 2012, the elementary school at the Brandenburg Gate has no longer been a pilot school, but a school with a distinctive educational focus. Here, children acquire their knowledge from the very beginning in both German and Russian. The educational standards to be achieved correspond to those of Berlin schools in general, but in addition, language proficiency in the respective partner language is developed, enabling students to follow lessons in both languages and to achieve the corresponding academic assessments. We consider the high proportion of children from other countries and cultural backgrounds to be an enrichment. They inspire school life and form the basis for a wide range of activities. For this, the school received the "Excellent European Education" certificate in 2019.

  • House rules

  • Version dated February 23, 2023, last amended August 1, 2006. The principal of the Brandenburg Gate Elementary School exercises the right of domicile in the school building and on the school grounds at Wilhelmstraße 52, as well as at the school sports facility "In den Ministergärten 2." If the principal or their deputy is not present, the school caretaker exercises this right on behalf of the school authority, the Mitte District Office of Berlin. Supplementary support and care are provided by tjfbg gGmbH. Early morning care for children takes place in the school building from 6:00 a.m. in the area of entrance A. As part of the Reliable Half-Day Elementary School (VHG), children are supervised from 7:30 a.m. in the service yard or, weather permitting, in the cafeteria. From 7:50 a.m., the entire schoolyard is supervised. Entry to classes is via both entrances to the schoolyard. After-school care is available in the building from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the area of Entrance A. Students go to their classrooms unaccompanied and prepare for lessons. The building and courtyard are closed once classes begin. Entry to the building is permitted from 8:15 a.m. via the visitor entrance on Wilhelmstrasse. Students leave the school grounds immediately after the end of classes or supplementary support and care. Persons not affiliated with the school, particularly parents/guardians, may enter the school building in the following cases: - Exercising parental rights of participation according to § 68, para. 2, §§ 75-78 and §§ 88-90 of the School Act; - Clarifying matters in the school office; - Attending pre-arranged appointments in the office or with school staff. Visitors must register in the office in advance. They will receive a visitor's pass for the duration of their appointment. This must be worn visibly and returned to the office before leaving the building. | Participation in school events | Working for local clubs and organizations | Picking up students
  • For security reasons, school staff are required to approach anyone not affiliated with the school and ask the reason for their presence.
  • In the afternoon, parents/guardians can enter the school building to pick up their children using a numerical code. This code must not be shared with anyone else.
  • Students are prohibited from using private mobile communication devices such as smartwatches, mobile phones, and tablets. In justified exceptional cases, permission may be granted by teaching staff.
  • The school accepts no liability for lost or damaged personal belongings.
  • Participants in sports and extracurricular activities will be picked up by their leaders and dismissed at the Wilhelmstraße exits.
  • Extracurricular activities must not disrupt lessons or school operations. These rules must be coordinated with the school administration. Smoking is prohibited on the entire school grounds and in all school outdoor areas. A fire or emergency will be indicated by a rising and falling siren. The school building must then be evacuated immediately according to the evacuation plan. The evacuation plan must be clearly displayed in classrooms and recreation rooms. All rooms and their windows must be closed after use. Electrical devices must be switched off and unplugged after use, with the exception of school-owned PCs and smartboards. In case of injuries or accidents, the supervising staff will inform the school office so that necessary measures can be taken. Lost and found items should be handed in to the school office for temporary safekeeping. Clothing will be kept in the lost and found box in the foyer and disposed of during the holidays.
